[Nfb-krafters-korner] Drop spindle

Thanks Dixie. I've tried spinning on a wheel, but wasn't very successful.
It never occurred to me to start at an edge and work across my roving.
Maybe this has been part of my problem.

How thick is your roving?

My roving is about 3 inches wide. I tend to hold it in the palm of my
non-dominant hand and work from the edge closest to the little finger, and
work across towards my thumb, then work back towards the little finger. I
pinch a little bit off the end and draft, or pull out some fiber little at a
time. You want to be able to spin at such a speed that you can have time to
draft.

I have to also put in here that I have only spun on a wheel, not a drop
spindle.

Pencil roving is a thin roving.

Some people split the wider roving down the center, down the length of it
making 2 smaller, thinner pieces.
There are different ways to draft, or feed the roving, but I tend to take
short little drafts so I can really feel what the fibers are doing in the
twist.

Huh! I've heard that, too. By that standard, my yarn is *real
interesting--fat thin fat thin ...

I'll read the instructions for my new spindle after work, and we'll see how
it goes.
I see already the writer says to strip thick roving, i.e., split it into 2
or 3 smaller strips that are easy to draft. Have others done this? How
does one know when it's needed, and when not?

Actually, that uneven first yarn is desired by many knitters. It gives nice
texture to the fabric.

Once one gets more proficient at spinning the yarn is much more uniform, and
less interesting.

Hi Tracy,

That is so awesome that you decided to try a new craft on your own. I taught
myself macramé and latch hooking. I hope you can get together with that
woman at the Farmer's Market and learn how to spin. I learned how to spin
wool with a drop spindle in a college class I took. I never did get the wool
to come out smoothly. I understand it take some practice and I did not get
much practice. It was fulfilling however to see yarn coming out of a hunk of
wool.
I also attended that chat.
Good luck to you.

Make this a wonderful day!
Cathy F
