Tracy, it is a llittle more complicated than that. You have to shape all
the pieces. I would recommend you start with a pattern from the store.
Have someone cut on the cutting line. If you are nervous about cutting
around the pieces, I can help you with a technique for guiding the scissors.
If you need help understanding how to lay out the pieces, you may need some
eyes to get started, but it does not have too be anybody with sewing
experience. You need to be able to identify the pieces by their shapes.
If you really want to cut from another garment, you should choose one you
have already worn out so you can cut it up, especially if it is pants. You
could probably make a t-shirt from one whole garment, but I recommend you
start with something you don't have to stretch.

You can email me offlist at walhoframona at gmail.com or call me at

Would you be interested in a basic sewing class too make a bag or an apron?
You may have enough experience already to do that. You do not need a
pattern for an apron unless you want it to be fancier than the first one I
would teach.

What I'd like to know is how to get/create sewing patterns. When I was a
teenager, Mom would cut out the pattern for me in heavy paper, then I could
do the rest myself. But now that I don't live with anyone handy, I don't
know what to do.

For instance, I have a pair of shorts I really like, and I have some fabric
I could use to make a similar pair. But how do I get from one to the other?
Lay my shorts on a big piece of paper, and cut out around them, leaving room
for selvedge?

Tracy
