Kathy, are you asking us to ask Singer to put money into Be My Eyes so they can continue their work, or are you asking them to work with Be My Eyes to make their products more accessible?

Jeanette

Subject: [NFB-Krafters-Korner] Sewing Machine Help Anyone?

Hello Everyone,
I came across an outreach request from Be My Eyes today. As you probably know, Be My Eyes has special access for callers wanting help from Microsoft professionals, from preganancy test readers, and others. Be My Eyes is asking users to recommend other possible partners to work with Be My Eyes.

On seeing that request, I quickly recommended Singer Sewing Company, or whatever the correct name is for the folks who made my sewing machine. I bought my machine almost two years ago. It’s unbelievably easy to thread, until you come to the very last step, the automatic needle threader. I played with it for many hours, as did my sighted friends, to no avail. Finally, after bringing the machine to the sewing machine repair store, it was determined that the automatic threader was misaligned and would not work properly. I returned the machine for another new machine of the same model. I never had time in my schedule to fool with it except a few minutes here and there. Finally, yesterday, my sighted friend Judy looked at it thoroughly, with and without a lighted magnifier, and she told me what was wrong. Apparently this replacement machine has the exact same defect as the one I returned.

I’m not even thinking of asking Amazon to replace the machine, since it’s been so long. What we did discover, however, is that a simple wire needle threader will work just fine.

Thinking forward into the future, I think a lot of us would benefit from sighted help on demand when playing with our sewing machines. Singer, in my experience, is the most common brand, but perhaps you guys have a different brand? How many of us have wanted to purchase a sewing machine but have not gathered the courage?

My request here is that those of you who are so inclined please consider contacting the folks at Be My Eyes and suggesting the Singer Sewing Company (or whatever the correct name is) as a future partner to their growing list of user benefits.

Miss you guys.

Hugs,

Cathy Miller, Louisiana
