Hello, Karyn,
With interchangeable kneedles, you can change needle sizes just by 
changing the tips of the needles and leaving the stitches in the middle 
of the cord. You can knit with one needle tip of one size and one of 
another. If you are out, you can carry a little case of needle tips 
rather than a larger one of circulars.
