Jen, embroidery stitches are designed to be decorative. Hot glue might work, but you need to be sure it will come out of the fabric. You can make a line of thread with large basting stitches which can later be removed. I have not done embroidery, but I believe there are many stitches for different looks. Of course, different colors make it interesting as well. Let us know how it goes! Oh, yes, the best way to keep track of your needle when you put down your work is to run it through the fablic several times. If you only do it once, it may fall out, but several times holds it pretty well.
