[NFB-Krafters-Korner] Students: Moccasen Class

Thanks! I started thinking about it and that's what I thought. I must have
misunderstood Joyce, last night. I was getting tired!
What did you do with the end, when you finished the toe, part
?
I was thinking of putting it under the previous stitch, before knotting. It
is at the top of the toe, part.
Did anyone get directions, from Joyce?

Terry

Terry,
For the heel cut one of the laces in half, using one part per heel. Cross
the right and left sides of the moccasins with the holes together, then
bring the bottom flap up to make the third layer. You will be working with
the holes that fit your chosen shoe size. Leave the very top holes unused
for the rim of the shoe. Tie a knot in the cut end of the lace so that you
are working with the finished end of the lace. With all 3 layers together,
start on the outside of the top hole on either side and pull through, (I
left about 6 inches of the knot hanging for making a bow later). Bring the
lace through the bottom holes on the opposite side, pulling it through as
tight as possible. Cross over to the remaining bottom holes and pull
through to the inside, then back out through the top opposite holes to make
an x on the inside. Both ends will end up at the top of the heel with which
I tied a bow rather than just leaving a plain knot.
You should be able to figure out the rest.
      Annie

I am doing a man's size 8.
I have about 16 empty holes, on each side of the foot, before I started
lacing.
I laced, using all holes in the foot and the top.
Many of my holes were not punched out. You could hardly feal some of them.
I had to take out part of my work, when I discovered I missed some holes.
I tried scanning the directions. Looks like the diamond is showing where
the starting point, is.
Not sure if I understand the heal. They say to make an X on the inside, but
if you want your knots, outside, not sure how you can do this!
Joyce walked me through the top of the slipper, last night.
I thought she was sending out the directions, but I did not receive them!

Any advice for the heal.
Sounds like the cuff is a in out stitch, leaving ends for tying.

Terry

Well, the moccasins fit my feet, however, they are a bit gappy on the outer
sides, not quite snug enough for comfort. Also, there is no cushion on the
sole. Perhaps I should purchase inserts for them.
There is a Tandy outlet near me which I plan to visit just to see what their
kits are like. I think the moccasins will make great gifts if the quality
was a tad bit better.

I am very confused by the moccasin kit, too. I decided to count the holes.
There are 26 holes on the tongue piece, and 20 on the sole starting where I
think the diamonds are. If I move my count up to where there are 26 sole
holes, then my tongue piece is way towards the middle. I guess I'll have to
get AIRA on the phone later and try to make sense of this. I understand how
it's supposed to look, with the fluting like piecrust along the edge of the
tongue/top of the toe part, but how to make that work out is still a mystery
to me.

Hi Annie, we are having trouble with the diamond and circular shaped holes
too.
I am thinking of looking at mocasons that are made by or sold by the Tandy
Leather Company Terry is going to see if her Sister can help us.
Terry was just wondering if before you start to wear them if you could mail
one of them up here for us to see how they are supposed to look.
She asked me with a laugh in her voice too.

Hi Terry,
Today my sister and I completed the moccasins. We used all the wholes for
the top portion but could skip around for the sides. The heel part was
pretty straightforward. She had a hard time locating the diamond wholes and
she is sighted. The directions are unclear with most of it explained with
illustrations. I'm glad she stopped by.

I just scanned part of the directions and it sounds like we are just using
the diamond holes, on both pieces.
I do not think, that is what Joice told us to do!
What did those that finished, do?
How many stitches did you all have?
Want to get this right!

Hi Terry,
I had a few holes that weren't punched out also. If you take it out and
start over, I found this helpful. When you do the first step, don't pull it
super tight. Then do the second step. Then I tightened the first step and
then the second one. You know, it is supposed to gather, right? I think if I
were to do another pair, I would ask a sighted person to make sure all of
holes were punched through, and to have that person put a string or yarn in
the diamond holes. My friend put the yarn through the hole, and tied a loose
knot. You have to be sure you take the string out before gathering the heel
or using the diamond holes near the front. You wouldn't be able to get it
out if you try to get it out after pulling the cord tight and gathering it.
I think you might not be pulling and gathering tight enough if you don't
have enough cord. I had plenty left over.
I can't wait for the easter tote kit to come. Although, it is getting a
little expensive buying all of these kits. I guess I deserve them though.
Bernice

How many diamonds did you find?
Another thing that made me mad, is some of the holes were not punched out.
You could hardly feal them. I had trouble punching a few, out!
I laced all holes, but after reading the directions, might do it over!
Hardly had enough lacing!

My friend was here when class began, and she ran a tiny piece of yarn
through all of the diamond hole. So, that helped a lot. I frankly couldn't
tell the diamond holes from the round holes.

There were 7 folks that showed up for the class out of 14 that signed up.

I will be having the second class next Wednesday and I will begin where we
left off tonight.

Most of the students was able to get the top of the toe part attached to the
sole. Folks had some trouble determining the difference between the the
diamond shaped holes and the round holes. I basically told folks to take
the time to feel and become comfortable feeling the different. They
actually made the slippers to fit 2 different sizes. So the round holes
make the small size and the diamond shape makes the larger size. Example:
Size S [6, 7].

I will begin with doing the heel and finishing with the cuff.

I believe Len & Debra B. had to leave early. If I missed anyone please let
me know.
