[NFB-Krafters-Korner] General cast on for winter scarf

Hi all! Planning to net some scarves as Christmas presents. I like big wide ones so it covers both my nose mouth and chin plus I’d like it to wrap around a bit. The first scarf I made was really big and long like that.

What I wondering is how many rows and how many cast on stitches are generally for a child’s scarf and adults. I’m not using a pattern because I’m not that sophisticated yet. My other question is does it matter what kind of yarn you use for a scarf? They’re needed here in Wisconsin in the winter so I figured the nieces and nephew could use those. Other family are getting things like potholders and all the kitchen excitement. I’m going to try to make a placement sized thing for my family to. Do they have to be Cotton like washcloths/dish cloths or is it OK to have it be a Kerlick? Hi found some really cool sparkly stuff that is more of a spring/summer set a colors. I wanted to use this for placements. It’s worsted weight and says it wants five needles so it’s pretty thin. Is this too small for what I want to use it for? Seems to me looking at my “collection“ that I have a lot of this kind of size yarn. I want to make sure I’m doing things right.

Thanks for answering all the infuriating beginner questions. Thursday night is beginning knitters and tomorrow night Tuesday is beginning Crocheters correct?
