Erica good afternoon and good to hear from you. This week we are having our beginner class in the afternoon at 2 o’clock next week it will be at night at 8 o’clock. This week in class we will be doing cables, but I’m sure we can find some time to answer your questions. In the meantime, quick question, and then I will write more I know you know how to knit. Are you comfortable with purling? Once you answer that question for me then I can give you some better guidelines about yarn and child’s sizes versus adult size scarves. About placemats, they can be different weights. I have not made acrylic ones and my inclination would be to make them out of cotton. Thinner or thicker cotton would work. It really depends on what you like. Remember, placemats are often a little more lacy in texture when done with yarn or cotton. My thought is they would be a harder project for a beginner, but a great goal to work toward. Answer me on the list and I will come up with some ideas for you that should work.

My other question is does it matter what kind of yarn you use for a scarf? They’re needed here in Wisconsin in the winter so I figured the nieces and nephew could use those. Other family are getting things like potholders and all the kitchen excitement. I’m going to try to make a placement sized thing for my family to. Do they have to be Cotton like washcloths/dish cloths or is it OK to have it be a Kerlick? Hi found some really cool sparkly stuff that is more of a spring/summer set a colors. I wanted to use this for placements. It’s worsted weight and says it wants five needles so it’s pretty thin. Is this too small for what I want to use it for? Seems to me looking at my “collection“ that I have a lot of this kind of size yarn. I want to make sure I’m doing things right.
