Another slip knot technique is:

Hold the end of the yarn in your right hand.

Hold your right hand over your left hand so that your yarn hangs down
between your left thumb and pointer finger.

Keeping your left pointer finger straight, Pinch the yarn with your left
thumb and middle finger about 7 inches below your right hand. You should
have about a 6 inch segment of yarn between your right hand and left pointer
finger.

Move your right hand in a circular motion so that the yarn wraps around your
left pointer finger. The yarn will wrap around your finger by going over
the top of that left pointer finger, behind it, under neath so that the yarn
is coming towards you, and then up the front of your finger.

Continue wrapping the yarn around your left pointer finger in this same
direction until your right hand is under your left hand.

Grasp the tail end of the yarn between your left thumb and pointer finger.
You are now pinching 2 strands of yarn between your left Thumb and pointer
finger. There should also be 2 strands of yarn going over the top of your
index finger.

There should not be any slack in the 2 strands of yarn between your pointer
finger and where you are pinching the 2 strands. Tighten it up if there is.

The 2 strands going over the top of your pointer finger are going to be
referred to as loops. The loop closest to the tip of your finger will be
called the front loop and the one closest to your knuckle will be referred
to as the back loop.

Lift the back loop over the front loop, but do not bring it off of your
finger. Let it sit in front of the loop it went over.

Repeat the above step of bringing the back loop over the front loop, but
this time bring it all the way off of your finger.

Pull down on the 2 strands pinched between your thumb and pointer finger to
tighten the knot.

Pull on the strand coming from your ball of yarn to tighten the loop around
your finger or needle, or keep pulling it to undo the knot.

Pull on the tail to make the loop bigger, or just spread the loop.

HTH,
Annette

So, there are two slip knot methods-- for crochet anyway.
The first one is:
1. Hang your thread over your thumb, short-end to the outside, long strand
towards the inside.
2. take your short-end and cross it over your long thread.
3. Keeping your short-end in place (crossed over the long thread) take the
thread hanging below the crossed over piece and push a loop up into the loop
created by your crossed over short-end pull the thread of your newly created
loop in the center until it makes a firm knot.
Finished result, long thread with knot around it that can be adjusted by
pulling on the long thread to tighten or loosen.

Second method is the magic loop:

lay your yarnover the top of your thumb, short-end toward the palm.
1. wrap the short-end around your thumb and under the long thread.
2. Pull the loop off your thumb so the short-end is going towards your left,
and is underneath the long thread; the long thread on topgoing towards your
rightand the loop is where your thumb was. Now reach your needle through the
center of the loop grab your long thread pull it through and make a chain.

The wonderful thing about the magic loop is when you are finished with the
piece, or the round or whatever your pattern calls for, you simply pull the
short-end to tighten things up.
