I glad you got something from my rant. I didn't deal with stripes and masks because I was locked into confirmation. If you are making a figurine, or even a drawing and don't have anything in the picture to compare it to, how would you know the llama is bigger than an alpaca? Same thing with the raccoon. How big are they, anyway? Bigger than a Cocker Spaniel? Certainly bigger than a squirrel, which may compare with a rabbit in size, though very different comfirmation.
I think of rabbits as small and round while squirrels are more slender so they can sit the way they are always posed. Also, they need to be slender and flexible to climb trees and make nests in the holes they find.
Otters seem to be popular in the needle felting realm. How do you know it's an otter? Color? position. You would always want to put it on its back with feet folded over its chest like they do when they float in the water. Also there is the tail, which is thick at the base and gets thinner toward the end.
That's why we are told that a Labrador has a tail like an otter.
By the way, if you want detailed dog breed descriptions Bookshare has something called The Complete Dog Book. It has the American Kennel Club standards for all the breeds recognized in the United States. Even with those descriptions, it often comes down to size and color.

Hi Lana. That was very interesting.
Hamsters don't have tails, while mice and gerbils do.
I thought racoons have a mask, and aren't chipmunks striped? But those are colors and not shapes.
And llamas are bigger than alpacas, but that's the only difference I know. Like you said, I'm sure their people could tell other differences, but not me.
Tracy

I put together the attached based on my experiences and frustrations with making small animals. I hope this helps. Feedback from anyone else is more than welcome.

Well can't say that I've seen a chipmunk or squirrel up close and personal either and I've had 20/200 in the one eye that works. But I get your point. Kind of need somebody to walk you through with a stuffed animal or a Christmas decoration. And I'm guessing race line pictures aren't much better. If you don't know where everything connects it's hard to put a mental picture in your head. A lot of places when they have animals like in a museum where they're taxidermy made don't want you to touch them. The oils on our hands mess with the pelts. I'm grateful that at camp we were able to touch. Now they don't really let kids do that anymore I guess. And Lions Camp the counselors aren't trained like they used to be. For years, the Director himself was Visually Impaired Parent and understood. Now they cater to the deaf and cognitively challenged primarily, and then they have other organizations like the Epilepsy Association and the Diabetes not work rent the camp to do programs for their kids. We're SOL nowadays. Trust me I have a beanie baby squirrel and it does have a big, puffy tail. Kind of like oh some of those dogs that have kind of curly curly curly, but kind of like a shepherds crook Curl to their tails and are fluffier than heck. I'm not a good dog breed person. I just know what's a guy dog and what isn't. This is from Ericka Nelson
