Lovette; Since the hat has cables, I would think a solid would show off the cables, the best!
I wouldn't think the brand would not matter, as long as you got the right number of stitches, per inch.

I found what I was looking for.
It is a worsted weight yarn.
Not sure what makes the shadow but it is a pattern with a section called shadow cable.
