I was disappointed that his long affiliation and work for the nfb was not mentioned. However, he was an important member of the whole blind community. Ed Meskys

Guilbert Vickery

Guilbert Vickery, 58 of Littleton, NH, left for his eternal home on June 3, 2014 surrounded by his wife and children.

He was born in Battle Creek, MI in 1955 to Gerald and Marilyn Vickery. A 1973 graduate of Manistique High School, Gil was active in many extracurricular activities. After high school, Gil attended Northern Michigan University. His strong work ethic led him to Mackinac Island where he would serve as the Superintendent of Services at The Grand Hotel. He would make his winter home in Florida, where he served in the same capacity at the Belleview Biltmore Hotel in Clearwater. It was during this time that he met his wife, Drucilla. The two would wed on July 10, 1982 in Bethlehem and would later make their home in Littleton, where they worked, served in their community, and raised two beautiful children.

After losing his sight in 1984, Gil attended the Carroll Center for the Blind where he would find a passion for helping others with disabilities to live independently. After generous donations, he was paired with his first canine companion, Erica, who guided him through everyday life, and established his trust for six future canine companions. Gil was a member of the Littleton Regional Hospital Board where he served nine years, with two years as chairman. Additionally, Gil was active with Boy Scout Troop 209 and served as Scoutmaster for a number of years and helped many scouts reach the rank Eagle, including his son Zachary. He was employed by the New Hampshire Independent Living Foundation and most recently, worked at Riverglen House Independent and Assisted Living Community as an independent consultant.

Gil was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, NY Yankees, LA Lakers, and the Michigan Wolverines. He attended many games with his friends and family and was very proud to be a shareholder in the Green Bay Packers.

He was proceeded in death by his father, Gerald Edwin Vickery in 1966 and his mother Marilyn Mary Henry in 2010. Also preceding him were his maternal grandparents, Harry and Thelma Hughson and paternal grandparents Guilbert and Lillian Vickery and Peggy Lawson.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Drucilla Vickery; two children, Zachary Vickery, and Katelyn Vickery; brother Stephen Vickery; sisters Jill Johnson and Michele Michaels; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

There will be a Friends and Family Gathering on Friday June 13, 2014 from 2 to 4 at Ross Funeral Home, Littleton Chapel. Burial will be held in September 2014 at the Fairview Cemetary in Manistique, MI
