Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

The April issue of
=8742f9ee1d&e=c806462bb1> AccessWorld is now available on our website.

This issue features:

*	Bringing the Conferences to You

*	Highlights from The 2018 American Foundation for the Blind
Leadership Conference, by Aaron Preece
This year's Leadership Conference was filled with information from across
the field of vision loss. Mainstream and assistive technology companies
provided details on their new products and future developments that will
benefit those with vision loss.

*	What's New in Braille and Beyond: A Report from the CSUN Assistive
Technology Conference, by J.J. Meddaugh
A crowd of thousands descended upon the largest technology conference for
people with disabilities. From high-tech to low-tech, many devices and
technologies caught our attention.

*	CSUN 2018 Heralds The Year of Wearables--Unless It Doesn't, by
Shelly Brisbin
The range of wearables continues to grow, and it's unclear which ones will
be useful to people with which kinds of vision loss. But one thing is clear:
the rate at which technology made for a mainstream audience is being applied
to devices aimed at those with vision loss is accelerating.

*	A Review of
=962ed36629&e=c806462bb1> "Stress Less, Browse Happy: Your Guide to More
Easily and Effectively Navigating the Internet with a Screen Reader," an
audio tutorial from Mystic Access, by Jamie Pauls
Learning to use a computer can be daunting, and those with a visual
impairment can find their frustrations compounded. For anyone who learns
best when they are talked through a task, "Stress Less, Browse Happy" may be
just the tutorial you are looking for.

*	Accessible Dictation with Open Source DictationBridge, by Bill
DictationBridge aims to bring improved accessibility to text dictation on
Windows. Recently, DictationBridge Version 1.0 was released, with versions
configured for NVDA and JAWS. I tried DictationBridge with all four possible
configurations. Here are some initial impressions.

*	Focusing on Braille: a Review of the Focus 5th Generation Braille
Displays From the VFO Group, by Scott Davert
The most recent line of Focus displays from the VFO Group supports multiple
Bluetooth connections, uses USB C cables, has a clock and calendar, and
supports a wider range of technology. This article examines the latest
displays, the Focus 14 and the Focus 40.

*	An Interview with Jonathan Mosen, Popular Broadcaster, Advocate, and
Teacher, by Janet Ingber
You may recognize Jonathan Mosen's name from his Blind Side podcast,
Mushroom FM, or his work with Freedom Scientific. He has been a major
advocate for people who are blind or visually impaired his entire adult
life. I sat down with Mr. Mosen to learn about his life and work.
