Subject: ONE ALBUQUERQUE sculpture come check it out and help find a
solution.

Greetings Federationists:

There has been much controversy regarding the One Albuquerque sculpture that
has been labeled a hazard to those individuals with disabilities, primarily
in the blind community. This sculpture, depicting the phrase "One
Albuquerque" in enormous steel print letters, is currently at the Northwest
corner of Tijeras and 3rd street in downtown Albuquerque. It is ten feet
tall and weighs 18,000 pounds! Because of its weight, it has to be placed in
the middle of pedestrian walkways or other areas that can handle the weight.
Only part of the sculpture is detectable by your cane. Currently, a line
containment barrier has been placed around the portion of the sculpture not
able to be detected by a cane. Unfortunately, the barrier can be moved very
easily so if you are not aware this piece of art is there, you can get hurt
even if you are using good cane technique. Therefore, I'd like to invite the
members of the National Federation of the Blind and the media to meet at the
northwest corner of Tijeras and Third on Saturday, august 17 between 10:00
and 11:00 AM. This meeting will be to point out the hazards the statue
causes as well as come up with a possible solution to the problem(s).

Please RSVP to Tara Chavez by noon on Friday if you are interested in coming
to this meeting. She can be contacted by email at nfb.abqchapter at gmail.com
<mailto:nfb.abqchapter at gmail.com> or by phone at 505-328-3349.
