National Federation of the Blind of New Mexico

Every month we get together to learn about blindness. We get together to
learn how others do the things they do after they lose their vision,
something they have relied on for some or all of their lives. 
Our next meeting is Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at 7:00 P. M. Mountain time in
our Zoom Room.
Christine Hall will dazzle us with her story. Be there or be a square!
Born June 12, 1939 in Los Angeles, California to loving and supportive
parents. One older brother.
Moved to Torrance, California at age 11. Shortly after the move, found out I
had an eye disease, called Iritis. Still pretty good vision in one eye.
Attended public school and graduated from high school. At age 18 got married
left aft er 14 months as discovered he was an alcoholic. I was 2 months
pregnant with my daughter, Candy.
I was declared legally blind at age 20. Went to Orientation Center for the
blind at 22 and Met Nancy Burns who introduced  me to the National
Federation of the blind. Began college and graduated with BA degree in
Social Welfare.
Employed in Social Work and Rehabilitation fields.
Moved to Sacramento,  CA for job change.
Married for second time at age 43
Moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where I resided for seven years. Lost remaining
part of vision in Hawaii.
Moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in September, 1991.
Many opportunities to travel- almost all 50 states and  Australia, New
Zealand, China, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, France, Mexico.
Actively involved in NFB, holding various leadership positions.
Serving on other boards such as the NM School for the blind and Visually
Impaired board of regents.
Both a cane user and guide dog user. Four guide dogs over a period of 30
years.
Health issues - Surgery for Lung Cancer, 2020, cancer free, on oxygen 24/7.
Spine problems including severe Scoliosis, Stenosis, Arthritis causing pain
making it difficult to do much walking.
Currently single, have one daughter, three grandchildren and one great
grandson
