July is Disability Pride Month and New Mexico's first Disability Pride
Parade will take place tomorrow (Saturday, July 13) in Santa Fe! The parade
is scheduled to start at 9:00 at the parking lot located at 131 Cathedral
Place, go along East Palace Avenue by the Plaza, and end at City Hall on
Lincoln Avenue with a ceremony that will include raising the Disability
Pride flag and a proclamation by the City of Santa Fe confirming the city's
commitment to inclusivity and the rights of people with disabilities. The
events will continue with entertainment, community tables and other
celebrations until 2:00.
The event is free and open to all - you don't have to be from Santa Fe to
participate. More details on the celebrations are available at

In case you're not familiar with the Disability Pride Flag, that's it at the
top of this message.
It has a dark background (black or dark grey), crossed by five diagonal
stripes from the upper left to the lower right, in colors representing
different types of disability:
* Red - physical disabilities
* Yellow - cognitive/intellectual disabilities and neurodiversity
* White/light grey - invisible/undiagnosed disabilities
* Blue - mental health disabilities
* Green - sensory disabilities.
Beyond the colors, each element of the flag has a meaning:
* Dark background - protest and mourning for those who have suffered
from ableism in all its forms
* Parallel stripes - solidarity within the disability community
* Diagonals - cutting across barriers and light cutting through
darkness.
July is also the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),
which was signed into law on July 26, 1990 and made America more inclusive -
for people with disabilities and for others - in many ways. The changes
brought about by the ADA to make buildings, transportation, employment,
education and other aspects of society more accessible to people with
disabilities (think of entry ramps, curb cuts, accessible buses, workplace
accommodations, and increases in home- and community-based services instead
of institutional care) have benefited many others as well (think of parents
pushing small children in strollers, or seniors needing extra help to
continue living independently in their own homes).
In honor of the ADA's 34th anniversary, the Disability Pride Month
celebrations will also include presentation of the Santa Fe Accessibility
Awards, honoring those who promote accessibility and inclusivity in the
community. The event will be held on Saturday, July 27 from 6:00 to 8:00
p.m. at the Drury Hotel, 828 Paseo de Peralta in Santa Fe. For more
information, go to https://www.disabilitypridenm.org/events/ or

th-ada-anniversary-tickets-911072370987?aff=ebdssbdestsearch> .
Even if you can't attend the events in Santa Fe, Disability Pride Month is a
time to remember how much progress has been made by people with disabilities
and what a large impact the ADA has had - while also recognizing that
there's still much more work to be done. Disability Pride Month and the
ADA anniversary are a time for celebration, wherever you are!
