Hello NFBDE Family,

 

Due to problems Sylvia was having with her email, I'm sending the announcement she had been trying to send out. Some of you have known that I have been back and forth to Maryland for much of June dealing with the illness of my grandfather. He went into the hospital on June 1 with pneumonia and declined quickly from there. On June 12, Pop passed away peacefully in hospice care. Though we miss him greatly, we're thankful that he's no longer suffering.

 

Pop was a supporter of the NFB for many years, and my grandparents were founding members of the Greater Carroll County Chapter in Maryland when we organized it in 2015. When I came to Delaware, he took great pride in our Southern Chapter and often asked how we were doing. I would ask for your prayers as we go through this difficult time. For anyone who is interested, here is his obituary:

 


Ronald "Ron" Cox Obituary


     Ronald "Ron" William Cox, age 83, of Westminster, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Dove House in Westminster. Born December 1, 1940 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Edwin T. and Hilda G. Cox (née Westenhofer). He was the beloved husband of Jeanne L. Cox (née Turnbaugh) for nearly 62 years.

     Ron grew up in Baltimore County and attended St. Paul's School for Boys, where he played lacrosse and graduated in 1958. He went on to attend the University of Baltimore and Gettysburg College, a period that would give him many stories to pass onto his children and grandchildren as they prepared for college.

     Ron decided to join his father in the family business, first at the Spirit Shop in Woodlawn, then the Barrel House in Finksburg, then the Bottle Shop in Union Mills, and finally Cox Ford in Hampstead. As his business grew, the Cox name became synonymous in Carroll County and beyond with integrity, quality and good business.

     Ron enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life, including lacrosse, skiing, traveling, and watching his beloved Ravens. He and Jeanne had many dogs throughout his life, all of whom he loved dearly. He had a special bond with his most recent dog, Snoopy. Over his lifetime Ron served in the Westminster Jaycees, Westminster Rotary Club, and the medical board of directors for Carroll Hospital. Ron was a faithful Episcopalian, and he and Jeanne attended the Church of the Ascension together for 62 years. He served as a leader of the church in many capacities, often a steady presence at pivotal moments.

     Surviving Ron are his wife Jeanne; daughters Bonnie and husband Michael Orzechowski of Olathe, KS and Wendy and husband Barry Messersmith of Millsboro, DE; and grandchildren Matthew, Christopher, Katherine, and Mary. He was predeceased by his parents.

     A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 12 at 11 AM, with a memorial gathering beginning at 9 AM, at Church of the Ascension: 23 North Court Street, Westminster, MD 21157.

     In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Church of the Ascension, 23 North Court Street, Westminster, MD 21157 or the Boys and Girls Club-Westminster, 71 East Main Street, Westminster, MD 21157.
