Empathy and compassion are one thing but pity is quite different.
I wouldn't say that these folks are malicious in any way but that this type
of thing spreads misconceptions about blindness when it is done without the
right type of leadership.
Haven't you heard that the road to hell is paved with good intentions?
So is the road to nowhere that many blind people find themselves on.

I'm new to this list. It's been interesting for me to read the flurry of
comments generated by this
topic. I didn't think much about it myself, until my sighted husband asked
me to go, partly in
support of one of his sighted co-workers who is attending despite
claustrophobic tendencies. I think
it takes some courage for a sighted person to try something like this. I can
report back on my
impressions of the event, if anyone is interested.

I read some strong feelings in many of the comments. There seems to be anger
and bitterness. I'm
sorry if anyone feels that way. My experience of people is that we mostly
have good intentions. Our
mistakes come out of ignorance or inexperience. The more experience we have
being around someone who
is different in some way, the more empathy and compassion we can learn.
