[Nfb-science] Totally blind meteorologists and climatologists

Dear Alexander,

I do not know any totally blind meteorologists or climatologists, but I want to offer some guidance in your search.

Certainly, blindness is a low incidence disability, and this is a low incidence profession. What you may also know is that very few blind people actually have no vision at all. This narrows the scope even further and may do so unnecessarily.

Just because a blind person may have some vision does not mean that that blind person is not using blindness techniques. You may have heard of the three structure discovery training centers available to people from any state, as well as the state-run ones in Nebraska, New Mexico, and Hawaii. At these training centers, we learn how to function independently without the use of any vision. It does not matter if we have any vision or not.

Since you have not attended one of these training centers, I want to strongly encourage you to consider it. Any blind person can improve his blindness skills in all areas by attending. Someone with as much motivation as you demonstrate would be a perfect candidate for one of these centers.

I do know a blind man in Connecticut who attended a university program to prepare him to be a meteorologist, but he works today as an adaptive technology instructor. I believe I have connected the two of you in previous years. His name is Steve. If you have lost touch with him and wish to reconnect, feel free to reach out again. Steve has some vision, but I can tell you from my experience with him that he does not use it.

I wish you all the best in your pursuit of your dream career.

Justin Salisbury
