Meet Estée Lauder’s Voice-enabled Makeup Assistant, an AI-powered tool for the Blind and visually impaired.
This innovative app offers audio feedback on the user’s foundation, eyeshadow and lipstick application, creating a more accessible beauty experience for the Blind and visually impaired.
How It Works:
The AI-powered Voice-enabled Makeup Assistant leverages facial recognition, machine learning and voice instruction technologies to learn your preferences and provide audio feedback when you ask.
After you apply your foundation, eyeshadow or lipstick, the app will use your phone’s front camera for a face scan. Using artificial intelligence, it identifies the makeup applied to your face, eyes and lips and assesses the uniformity and boundaries of application and coverage. If there are suggested areas to touch up, the virtual Makeup Assistant identifies them and makes audible recommendations so you can adjust your look. After your touch up, the app does another face scan and provides feedback on the accuracy of application.

Amazing!
This is a fantastic app that is very easy to follow. It works really well with the iPhone. It easily identified areas of low coverage on my foundation. Fantastic!

Good app with a lot of potential if improved
The concept its great. But the App is not available on the ITALIAN APP STORE AND MANY OTHER COUNTRIES please make this app more accessible to more users around the world ad there are about 40 million people with visual disability a good few of them will benefit from this app and also maybe add other languagesGood app that need to be improve

Hi, Veronica,
If you are one who is used to applying makeup anyway, you can certainly do this without visual assistance, many of us have done this successfully all our lives, with some initial input from sighted folks, in my case, it was my mom back when I started using it.
Also, when buying cover, I’ve asked the sales person to help match the shade to my skin shading, but when you know your brand and shade, that is all you need to continue by yourself.
You already would know where to apply the makeup, best way to blot, how to blend, etc.

So Robert I know you do not need something like this but one of my questions is, if this app could potentially help you put your make-up on correctly could it not also help a man shave correctly? I mean, I’m just wondering what’s so special about it?
Also my thoughts are if you put your make-up on wouldn’t you have to keep picking up your device so the camera could see what you are doing or what you have done? Questions, questions?

“We identified that there was a huge accessibility gap in the beauty industry for those with disabilities, specifically for individuals who are low vision and blind,” says Lamia Drew, global inclusive technology director at Estée Lauder Companies. So after years of research, interviews, and testing done in tandem with people in the low-vision and blind communities, Estée Lauder launched VMA in January 2023. “Many people told us that when they put on makeup, they would have to send a selfie to a person that they trusted to give them honest feedback,” Drew explains. “The consistent theme really was that many people in this community felt like their makeup routine created a dependence on others and we want VMA to change that.”

I strive to be as independent as I can with everything that I do. So when I got the chance to help develop this app all the way in Colorado Springs, Colorado, I was so excited. It’s super incredible to just have something like this out there. A real game changer.
I think back to when I was in high school and first became interested in makeup. I’d experiment, but certain products like lipstick were challenging. Overall, the hardest part of makeup for me is that I’d have to get people to check it every single time. The older I get, the less I care about it, but when I was younger, I was so easily embarrassed, so I would never want to go out with weird, blotchy makeup. I just remember spending so much time in the bathroom doing my makeup, and then getting frustrated and just asking someone else to do it. Ultimately, makeup was time-consuming and deflating, and I felt like I just couldn’t do it myself. That was something that really bothered me. It felt like it went against my entire definition of independence.
