Dear David R. Stager, your information about the patient is very limited
but by logical deduction, he must have lost his hearing at age 40 so he had
his hearing up to age 40 and apparently he is not mute. 90% of all legally
blind people have at least a little limited vision whether it is perifphial,
pinpoint or foggy. You did not say which type of limited vision he still
has. If he was able to read lips until recently, his vision must have been
pretty good. To learn braille, tactile or even ASL at age 70 is hardly
worthwhile. Since he apparently has speech, he should be trained to ask all
kinds of questions which can be answered with a simple yes or no through
simple hand squeezes. This way he will be able to ask questions and get them
answered. This is also one reason why I recommend free high speed internet
service to learn communication through the email and chats. It is more
comprehensible then ASL or BRAILLE. This way the deaf and the blind are not
isolated to their small group but can communicate with everyone. To say that
a 70 year old has a limited education is an insult. Life itself and not
schools is the best educator. I hope this was helpful.WITH MY LOVE WITH
ALOHA TO ALL. hg pink
