Nonvisual indoor travel - Paid for your time
HI You All
Ruth Sager, our NFB Seniors Division's President, wants us all to know of,
and possibly take part in the following study:
Dear Ruth, hope you are doing well. Here is the research summary including
what you asked us. Please let me know if this works for you.
Project Title: "University Mobility Challenge: Designing
Wayfinding Technologies that Blind and Older Individuals Can Trust
UCI HS# 2019-5202
UMBC IRB# Y19RK12137
Research Team: A collaboration between University of Maryland Baltimore
County (UMBC) and University of California Irvine (UCI)
Principal Investigators: Dr. Ravi Kuber (UMBC: rkuber at umbc.edu
<mailto:rkuber at umbc.edu> ) and Dr. Stacy Branham (UCI: sbranham at uci.edu
<mailto:sbranham at uci.edu> )
Student Lead: PhD candidate, Ali Abdolrahmani (UMBC: aliab1 at umbc.edu
<mailto:aliab1 at umbc.edu> )
Summary: This is Ali Abdolrahmani, PhD candidate at UMBC. Our research teams
at UMBC and UCI are working on a project creating technology using voice
assistants such as Siri or Google Assistant, to support blind and sighted
travelers with their indoor navigation needs, including traveling through
airports. Currently, we are starting a new phase of the project, where we
are gaining in-depth user feedback on voice-based travel assistant
prototypes that our team is designing. We need to recruit participants who
are both legally blind and aged 60 and over. Participants who are interested
will take part in a series of online workshops. They (and any household
members they would like to invite) will be asked about their travel
experiences and how voice assistants may benefit them. Based on the feedback
we receive, we will send participants our prototypes to try out, and we will
collect feedback and recommendations from them in further online sessions.
The aim would be to iteratively revise the design over the course of
approximately two months. Each session will approximately take 60 to 90
minutes and participants will be compensated $20 per hour for their time and
effort.
If interested, please contact me at aliab1 at umbc.edu <mailto:aliab1 at umbc.edu>
. My research colleagues will then contact you to schedule the first round
of the sessions.
Respectfully yours,
Robert Leslie Newman
