[nfb-talk] Here We Go Again

Ladies and gentlemen,
We need to remember how this discussion got started. ray suggested
that they engage some blind people to work on the complete Make-over
show. Presumably he meant that the blind people would work alongside
the other tradespeople, building a house. Brian simply raised the very
valid point that, in this very specific situation, speed was of the
essence. He wondered if blind tradespeople, such as carpenters, could
work as quickly as their sighted counterparts. At no time did Brian
doubt the abilities or competence of blind carpenters in particular,
or blind people in general. He simply raised the question as to
whether the blind workers could work efficiently at the same speed as
the sighted workers.

I do not understand why people react so strongly and rudely to Brian
for raising this question. As far as I'm concerned, it's a valid
question and I have not read anything in all the responses that
attempts to answer this question. Brian never said that blind people
couldn't do things. He never questioned blind people's abilities to do
what they put their minds to. He did make the point that, if a blind
person needed so much assistance that they were not able to do the job
without it, that perhaps they shouldn't be doing the job. I agree with
that statement.

However, i was personally disappointed to see my Federation family
attack Brian for asking a valid question. This kind of behaviour is
what gives people fuel for their antifederation fire. I don't know
Brian, but he did ask a great question and no one has yet offered an
answer. Just a lot of opposition to an issue that was never raised.

For my money Brian, thanks for being a realist and asking the hard
questions. I don't know if blind carpenters, plumbers, electricians
and others could work as efficiently, at the same speed as their
sighted colleagues. If they can't, then they shouldn't be on the
Complete Make-over work site, in my opinion.

Regards,

Heather Field

hi,

it wasn't difficult, it didn't happen.
I obtained computer programming degrees, did the interview and job
fair
circuit for about 2 years and never a nibble about 10 years ago.
Created personal business such as hardware/software support.
