[nfb-talk] Dining in the dark

Wow, that is an excellent point, Ray. I'll admit I was hesitant to serve as
a waiter during Dining in the Dark. But now I see it as an opportunity. And,
I feel each of us has the responsibility to seize opportunities like this
when they come along.

I'm going to make sure the people I serve don't sit there and complain about
how hard it is to feed yourself if you can't see. I went blind very
gradually so maybe it was something I learned over an extended period of
time. But I honestly don't think feeding yourself is particularly difficult
if you can't see. And I don't intend to let the people I serve pretend it
is.

I think to some degree, the diners are going to make it out to be worse than
it is in order to show us blind people how brave we are. They are just
trying to be complimentary. The problem is that it can be a bit patronizing.
I just won't let them get away with that.
