[nfb-talk] Fwd: more TV providers provide talking menus for blind subscribers

I know that dish have a box that will provide accessible technology for blind/low vision and the hearing impaired. I will have my system installed tomorrow and I will inform of the enhancements to my viewing after that.

I inquired to what the program provides, their answer:

1. Audio description of show, much like what you get from the movies
2. Verbal announcing of all text on screen including captions
3. announcement of the button pushed on remote
4. Can be used on multiple tv's and can be turned on or off at any set

I feel that I got lucky with the customer service representative I got. He was not familiar with the system, but he took the time to complete some research as well asked for answers to the things that he did not understand. It took over an hour, but if this system works for me, it was worth it.

I'll keep you all posted on tomorrow.

Living the dream, by raising expectations!

Much Love,
Walter Mitchell

I'm confused! Dish Network's Web site says they have three receivers that offer text-to-speech: the Hopper 2, and Hopper 3, and Wally. However, a Dish Network Customer Service representative told me last night that they didn't have any receivers that currently offer text-to-speech. Postings on this list would appear to indicate otherwise. I guess my question is this: does Dish Network have receivers which currently offer text-to-speech? If they are still working on the talking guide then what does the text-to-speech capabilities allow a blind person to be able to do? I am happy to upgrade and don't have a problem paying to upgrade my receiver, I would just like to know what I will have access to and what I won't.
Thanks!
Dennis

Great. Dish tells me that they are still working on the voice guide part but it will be ready soon. This I know because another NFB member in Ohio has put in the same order.

Sent from my Mac, The Only computer with full accessibility for the blind built-in

Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray,

Still a very happy Comcast XFinity Voice Guidance, Mac, Verizon Wireless iPhone7+ and Apple TV user!

I only had to provide a one dollar refundable charge to initiate the upgrade. I will provide feedback on the details of this system in the near future.
