[nfb-talk] Inquiring about the Amazon Echo

I know this isn’t necessarily blindness related, but I am wanting to give a Christmas gift to someone who is blind but need to know a couple of things first.
Does anyone who have the Amazon Echo (Alexa) know if it is required that a person be a member of Amazon Prime?  Can Alexa be used by folks who hae an Amazon account but aren’t Amazon Prime members?
Also, if you had to choose between the Amazon Echo and the Google Home, which would you choose?

I have the Amazon echo, but I was already a Prime member, so it didn’t matter to me.  If anything, it benefitted me.
Anyway, some information would be appreciated.
