[nfb-talk] Fwd: {Single Payer} Disabled protesters dragged from McConnell's office! So where our blind organizations?

Hello, Kay,

I would agree totally with that, and I remember the issue when police in California tried to arrest people, but the jails weren't physically accessible so couldn't do it hahahaha!

I'm all for standing up for rights for sure, as long as you can make your point without getting vulgar or derogatory, because that doesn't help anyone.

As I understand it, although we applaud, support, and believe in rights for all disabilities, the NFB focuses on blindness-specific needs, as we are the National Federation Of The Blind. I've been successfully proactive many, many times regarding accessibility issues, and if I had to, would go to jail for them, but would hope all the while to do it in a rational dignified manner, maintaining my position on accessibility rights. My example is a gentleman I know who was carried off of an airline several years ago.

Disorderly conduct gets people nowhere. Just some thoughts.

Judy

Hi, I am certain that did happen. Several years ago, I participated in an ADAPT rally. Police did come and pull people from there chairs, and actually threw them in the back of trucks without their chairs. They were eventually released, but it was not a good scene. I remember it well because it was my 25th birthday, and an officer threatened to arrest me as well. I told him there was no way I was being arrested on my birthday, and that it was undignified to arrest these guys without their chairs. Trust me, it happens.

Judy – are you claiming that adapt was not there? That people were not pulled out of their wheelchairs and arrested and taken to jail without them? This actually did happen! Where are blind people on this?

That whole story is on that same Rachel Madow podcast. They snarled traffic in Denver for a day and a half to protest the fact that they couldn't use city buses. It made me think of all the debates I have had on this list with people who feard a "backlash" from pushing for our rights.
