Job Description
The Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind (USDB) is seeking a meticulous and responsible candidate to fill a Braille Proofreader position. This position is located in Ogden.
Principal Duties
As a Braille Proofreader you will:
* Provide quality assurance by proofreading accessible instructional materials in UEB (Unified English Braille) format and Nemeth code
* Verify proof copies of Braille transcription against original scripts to detect grammatical, typographical, or compositional errors and marks proofs for correction
* Verify Braille documents are formatted correctly
* Collaborate with Braille textbook transcribers in the production of accessible instructional materials
* Consult reference books to check rules of grammar and composition
* Mark proof with pencil to correct errors, using standard printers' marks
The Ideal Candidate:
The model candidate for this position is someone who:
* Possess Braille Proofreader certification through the Library of Congress. Would be willing to hire someone without certification at a lower hourly rate. Certification must be obtained from the Library of Congress within 18 months from date of hire in order to be considered for continued employment.
* Must have a keen understanding of Literary Braille and English grammar, know the Nemeth code, be detail-oriented, and have knowledge of research methods, techniques, and/or sources of information.
* Must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively
* Learn and use automated computer software programs
* Operate scanning and text-to-speech programs and related equipment
* Establish, organize, and/or maintain files
* Review and/or edit documents for accuracy and completeness;
* Read and interpret tactile graphics and read and understand instructional materials in a variety of curriculum areas, including language arts, math, and science on instructional levels from K-12
* Work within a structured setting
* Work independently and with assistance
* Preference may be given to qualified blind/visually impaired candidates.
* Successful completion of criminal background check is contingent upon employment
Compensation:
$22.00 per hour. This position is eligible for a full benefits package including medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance, a retirement plan, plus paid leave to include annual, sick, and holiday pay.
