[Nfb-web] Webcasting State Convention

Good morning. Just a few thoughts about streaming. We have tried it twice here in Missouri. Our first attempt was pretty successful. I think it actually brought us a new member or two, and certainly some notes of appreciation from members who were ill and desperately wanted to attend. I'm not sure if we did any broadcasting at all the second time around, and we're now trying to figure out why that is.

I know that people like the idea of hearing what is happening when it is happening. This is the advantage of streaming. But the flipside is that streaming requires a good Internet connection, some good equipment, and a very loyal person to watchdog the whole thing and make it his primary convention assignment. Recording the convention and then putting it up on a site where people can get at it is much less expensive, can be done without extensive setup, and still provides the opportunity for hearing exactly what happened at the convention.

I think that in our state we are still very much wrestling with what to do. We have enough commitment to the project that we are actively seeking expertise in learning how to do it, have put some money into it already that we would like to see well spent, but we are a bit put off by the idea that we will probably add $300 a year to our convention costs by paying the hotel for an Internet connection, not to mention the problem that occurs when something happens to the broadcast and we have to decide whether the problem was on our end or whether it was the fault of the hotel and we are therefore do some reimbursement.

Gary

I'd like to hear from those who have done a webcast of a state convention. How many people listened to the stream? I think having a audio recording is a good idea.

Dan, Mike and all,

On a previous thread on this subject, I attached a document that evaluated what is required and advice on pitfalls. Bryan Shulz was kind enough to provide his input and experience last year.

I can format the document and place it on Drupal as a "Tip". That way everyone can review/comment/correct/add to it. What do you think?

Arnold
