[Nfb-web] Webcasting State Convention

In Minnesota, we have also tossed the idea around. We made one attempt but it failed due to network problems. However, we are also pursuing the ability to get
presentations archived. From what I have read and heard, getting a reliable enough connection is not always easy with considerable costs sometimes. Also, while
our conventions are public, it can be helpful to know exactly who is present when sensitive matters are discussed. In today's free flow of information, perhaps such
things as the business that a convention discusses needs to be looked at, but I don't think it is a casual concern. Finally, there needs to be an investment in
personnel to do this right in my opinion. For example, open microphones at the head table can convey whispered comments to the world via the internet that the
audience in the room would not hear. I've seen this on recordings of meetings so this isn't something I am dreaming up. One really needs to have someone
monitoring what is sent out to be certain that what is conveyed to the internet is approximately equal to what the audience gets. I personally feel that we pay more
attention to the technical aspects of making conventions available and not enough on cost, reliability, and how convention content may need to be adjusted. If we
hope to reach non-members, we're not going to impress them by providing a stream that doesn't work well or contains a lot of background noise that is distracting.
Saying we are going to stream only to find that the connection is inadequate to provide a reliable stream doesn't do us any good. One whispered comment when
someone thinks a microphone is closed that so-and-so is really being a jerk could create real problems for us. We need to think about that, too.

Besides providing the information for technically providing a live convention stream, it would be helpful to get the feelings of others as to how we handle some of the
related issues. In other words, we shouldn't stream conventions just because we can, we need to look at the benefits and what must be done to make it something
that truly helps us as an organization.
