[NFB-Web] Chapter Dues Collection

I don’t know how other states are doing chapter membership dues, but this is what Illinois is doing.

They have a webform on their WordPress powered site using a form generation system called Gravity Forms to collect membership information for its At Large Chapter and the payment of dues through the affiliate’s PayPal account. I believe, but don’t know for sure, that the At Large Chapter is listed as a line item account in the affiliate treasury. So when dues are received through the PayPal account and then transferred to the affiliate’s checking account, funds designated for membership dues will first go to the line item account and then at a designated time, funds from the chapter to the affiliate for the annual membership dues will be moved from the line item account to the general account.

Due to Illinois having their state convention virtually this year, they will be collecting membership dues through its convention registration form that will be connected to the affiliate’s PayPal account. At some point after the convention concludes, those funds will be transferred from PayPal into the checking account prior to being disbursed to the chapters.

That’s true, Erik. Exactly how it’s handled will vary from state to state and depends on each affiliate’s constitution. I may have been a little careless in my language. In Maryland, part of chapter dues go to the state affiliate and part stays with the chapter.

I always thought chapters forwarded dues to affiliates along with membership rosters, rather than the other way around. Hum.

In Maryland, the affiliate president has extended the use of the state PayPal donation form to chapters (and divisions). Less sophisticated than what Arthur is describing, members must simply write into the memo field the purpose of their transaction—Baltimore City chapter dues, tickets for xxx event, etc. Funds are forwarded to chapters minus the PayPal transaction fees.

In the past, New York used Ubercart to collect dues for chapters and divisions. I set this up on the website as a feature without really telling leadership. The new president didn’t want to deal with the parsing out of funds once collected so I disabled it several years ago.

I was told yesterday, ironically, that he wants some of that functionality back for the at-large chapter and divisions. I am going to use the functionality of the PayPal donate button to do this. PayPal allows you to specify certain categories for donations as a drop-down list. So, I’m going to add donations to chapters and divisions as a part of that. Hope to have it done by end of today, if anyone wants to check it out.

For an Ubercart example, visit blindeducators.org and click on the join menu item.

Hi,

Are any affiliates out there playing a central role in the collection of dues for their local chapters via their websites? If so, what mechanism are you using?

Thank you for any guidance,

Joe
