>
>

> Arizona Legislation
>
> Jordan reported that, NFB of Arizona leaders met with other stakeholders to build momentum for the next legislative session. For example, Ashleigh Moon and Colin Wong, Co-Chairs of the Education Committee met with Alissa Trolinger, Superintendent of Special Education in the Arizona Department of Education, pledging to have the Braille Bill introduced next year. She was enthusiastic, and will work to connect us with her superiors. Meanwhile, we in the Arizona Affiliate will diligently work on laying down the groundwork for the 2022 Legislative Session, by ensuring that the language of the Braille Bill is current, by getting the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB) on board, and by contacting Senator Pace over the summer.
>
>
>
> Jordan has not been given an update, regarding the status for increased funding of the Independent Living Rehabilitation Services for Senior Blind.
>
>
>
> Jordan stated that, accessible online voting is not going to happen by the approval of the Arizona Legislature, but we will continue to advocate for this fundamental right of blind American citizens. Meanwhile, the conversation continues at the national level to establish strategies for accessible online voting to be in place by the 2022 Mid-term Elections.
>
>
>
> Governor Ducey signed the bill that will require anyone on the Permanent early Voter List that has not voted in two consecutive elections, to have their voter registration removed from this list, requiring them to re-register. While this practice may “clean up” the list by purging inactive voter registrations, it will penalize those voters that may be facing unforeseen circumstances.

> Senate Bill S1 on voting is missing key components, such as accessible absentee voting by mail for blind and other disabled voters. One of the goals of the Federation is to require at least two accessible voting machines per polling location, that can be used by the blind and other disabled voters, as well as the general public.

>
> Jordan stated that, the recruiting of new members to serve on state committees, as well as integrating diversity into the fabric of the organization’s DNA, are the main focuses of the Arizona Affiliate. In June, a member of the Arizona Diversity Committee will discuss the importance of diversity, and what diversity means, during chapter and division meetings. Also, the Committee is in the early planning stages of a seminar and/or introducing components of the diversity discussion throughout the 2021 Arizona State Convention. In addition, the Committee is planning to host state-wide seminars and meetings, so may invite experts experienced in diversity topics to make presentations. Jeff offered to share contact information for his colleagues who are experienced experts in the field of diversity.

>
> Jordan reported that, The Parents’ Division virtual social was attended by blind parents with sighted children and sighted parents with blind children. They expressed interest in learning more about braille and blindness, in general. The parents want more Q&A discussion groups, as well as mentors. A first-time parent with a blind son won the iPad donated by the Affiliate, and her son will use it as intended to play accessible, educational games, which will increase integrated interaction with his family and peers. Although the Parents’ Division primarily focuses on matters faced by students from pre-school through high school, the issues often overlap with those of post-secondary education students. The Arizona Association of Blind Students (AABS) and the NFB Student’s Division advocate for students at the post-secondary education level. Jeff expressed interest in getting involved.

> Jordan summarized that, the Community Outreach Committee discussed what community outreach should look like, identified available resources, established priorities, and developed an outreach strategy to maximize member involvement and positive outcome, without spreading ourselves too thin as a chapter. The main priority of this Committee is to make presentations to community groups to educate the public about the NFB, about blindness, and about the vast range of resources available to help blind people to realize our dreams and to live the life we want. In the near future, one outreach event will be scheduled per month, alternating between group presentations and volunteer opportunities.
