>
> Jordan reported that, great progress is being made on the Access Technology Affordability Act. Representative Schweikert (Scottsdale) is the only Arizona legislator who is sponsoring this bill, as of this report. Jordan challenged members to contact our District representative to support this bill. Ruben Gallego has expressed interest, so will definitely urge him to sign on. For more information about this bill, go to

> Affiliate Diversity and Inclusion Committee Update
>
> Jordan reported that, this Committee met two weeks ago, to strategize ways in which diversity and inclusion efforts can be rolled out in Arizona. This is a major focus in the Affiliate, to reflect the NFB’s national efforts. A seminar is being planned for this year’s State Convention. In the next few months, members of the Committee will meet with Chapters to answer questions and plan local diversity events. An educational seminar outside of the State Convention is also being considered.
>
>
>
> President Porterfield is responsible for appointing members to Affiliate Committees. Therefore, Brad will email Donald and Colin with his recommendation from the Phoenix Chapter. Colin stated that, a framework is being developed for selecting additional Committee members according to strict guidelines, due to the sensitive nature of this Committee’s work.
>
>
>
> Colin added that, the national Diversity and Inclusion Committee conducted anti-bias training for National and Affiliate leaders, which included President Porterfield and Colin, as the chair of the Affiliate Committee. Eventually, this training will be offered to the general membership, to ensure inclusion, even if unaware of another person’s background.
>
>
>
> RAIN Training
>
> To ensure that the true nature of sexual harassment, specifically, and harassment, generally, is understood, at the national, state, and local level, the NFB has engaged in RAIN Training. Now that the National Board has gone through this training, Affiliate Boards and local Chapter presidents are being required to participate, to ensure that we are not contributing to that kind of environment by our actions and speech .

> Jordan informed us that, the 2021 NFB of Arizona Convention Arrangements Committee met in March, and will meet, again, later in April. This year’s Convention will be virtual, and is scheduled,
>
> Date: Thursday, September 02, 2021 through Sunday, September 05, 2021
>
> This schedule will allow us to conduct Affiliate business, on Sunday. Online registration will open, in the near future, and is free.
>
>
>
> One of the goals of the 2021 Convention Arrangements Committee is to increase member engagement and involvement, since this is our Federation Family Reunion. Each Committee member has an assigned area of responsibility to build a coalition to realize this goal. Everyone is encouraged to find a way in which to serve. You may contact Jordan, Colin, or Brad.
>

>
> Another goal of the Committee is to post the Convention Agenda and Seminar details earlier. Seminars are scheduled,
>
> Date: Friday, September 03, 2021
>
>
>
> Anyone may submit a seminar idea and general plan of action, by emailing President Porterfield, Jordan, Bob Kresmer, and Brad. While Committee members are willing to assist with seminar development, those who submit a proposal must be committed to do the work, and facilitate the seminar. Proposals must be submitted, as soon as possible, to be considered for approval. Approved seminars must conform to the NFB philosophy, and line up with the Convention theme. Final seminar agendas are due in July.

> Door Prizes/Auction Sub-Committee, Brad Kuhn, Chair
>
> Brad is chairing this year’s Door Prize and Auction Sub-Committee, and asked for volunteers to assist. Sheryl, Cindy, Rodney, and Vicki agreed to serve on this Committee. All Chapter and Division presidents are being asked to assign a member to serve, as well. During the first Committee meeting, Joanne Gabias will share her experience, as last year’s Committee chair. Also, the Committee will develop a game-plan as how to solicit, secure, and inventory donations for door prizes and auction items. During the Convention, duties will include selecting items to pair as door prizes, pulling names for door prizes, serving as the auctioneer, and distributing door prizes and auction items to winners. Gift cards are ideal as door prizes, so as to reduce the cost of postage when mailing them to winners. Once the Donation Request letter (complete with the NFBA nonprofit FEIN number for tax purposes) is updated and approved by President Porterfield, it will be made available to those that are contacting businesses for donations.

> Education Committee Update, Ashleigh Moon & Colin Wong, Co-Chairs/NFB of AZ Education Committee
>
> Ashleigh reported that, the Education Committee is planning a seminar for the State Convention, to include Pearsons and other nationally recognized leaders to make presentations to parents and teachers, covering a variety of educational issues impacting blind children. It is hoped that, this seminar will serve as an introduction to Assistive Technology, leading to a larger, in-person seminar, later in the Fall. Such a seminar focusing exclusively on Assistive Technology would give parents a rare opportunity to get hands-on experience with the kinds of technology their blind child is already or may in the future use in the classroom. Also, the possibility of offering the Assistive Technology Seminar to Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI’s) as an opportunity to earn Professional Development Credits is being researched.
>

>
> Individualized Education Program (I.E.P.) Advocacy
>
> Ashleigh and Colin have participated in a couple of I.E.P. meetings, that have gone well.
>
>
>
> Colin reported that, there has been contact with the Arizona Department of Education, recently. The Department has been updated as to the progress of the NFBA Education Committee, and efforts are being made to learn what are the Department’s policies regarding Covid for the Fall Semester. A meeting is scheduled with the Associate Superintendent of Special Needs, next month.
>
>
>
> Braille Readers are Leaders (BRAL) Contest Update
>
> Ashleigh is organizing contact information for this year’s BRAL Contest participants in a spreadsheet, so each can be matched with a local Chapter. A presentation to recognize these participants will be made at the State Convention, and a video will feature some students sharing their experience. No gift bag will be given out, this year. Rather, the Committee will encourage Arizona chapters to recognize participants in the local area, during a regular business meeting, the month before, either the NFB National Convention, or the NFB of Arizona State Convention. Parents are more likely to stay in touch with the NFB and attend a convention, shortly after meeting with a local Chapter. The Membership Committee, the Social Committee, and the Community Outreach Committee will jointly plan a low-key event, during the June or August Phoenix Chapter Business Meeting. Colin reminded us that, twenty Arizonans registered in the BRAL Contest, which is the largest number of participants representing an NFB Affiliate.
>
>
>
> Scholarship Committee, Ashleigh Moon, Member/NFB of AZ Scholarship Committee
>
> Ashleigh reported that, two Q&A sessions were conducted, to guide applicants through the Scholarship Application process. Two students attended each session, and President Porterfield was available to answer questions and provide direction. At this time, it is unknown the number of Arizona students that applied for National Scholarships. The national application deadline was Wednesday, March 31, 2021, and the Arizona Scholarship application deadline is Monday, May 31, 2021 (Memorial Day). The Arizona Affiliate Board approved to award three $1,000 State Scholarships, due to savings via virtual convention attendance.

> 2021 Phoenix Chapter Norma Robertson Annual Picnic - Virtual
>
> On behalf of Joy, Monica asked members for suggestions. Since we could not hold the annual picnic last year, Brad emphasized the need to plan some kind of social event, even though it will have to be virtual. Jordan observed that, holding a virtual picnic may be difficult, so recommended that an event, such as a movie night or a game night be planned. As is our custom, we will invite other chapters to join us. A motion was made, seconded, and approved to allocate $50.00 for the virtual, social event.

> Phoenix Chapter 2021 Constitution Review Committee, Vicki Hodges, Chair
>
> The Committee met Thursday, March 18, and Thursday, March 30, at 7:00 p.m., to review articles that were edited by members outside the Committee meetings. A few changes in those articles are being made in the working document of the Constitution. The final article, regarding Officers and the Board of Directors, will be developed for review at the next meeting, scheduled, Thursday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m. Once the Committee approves a final draft, the Constitution will be submitted to President Porterfield, Second Vice President Kresmer, and Secretary Marcus Schmidt, for their review and recommendations. Once all editions have been made based on their comments, a reworked draft of the Revised Constitution will be submitted in writing and read at a Phoenix Chapter Business Meeting, for approval by the Membership present and voting. After the document has been approved by the Phoenix Chapter Membership, it will be submitted to President Porterfield and the NFBA Board, for a formal determination.
>
>
>
> Committee members agreed to complete our task, since we were several weeks into the process, when President Porterfield announced that, the National Membership Committee had formed a work group to develop an NFB Constitution template. We will present the document, if approved by the Membership, as the Phoenix Chapter’s contribution to the Federation. The work of this Committee is based on referencing sanctioned NFB documents: The NFB Constitution (2014), the National Code of Conduct (December 05, 2020), and the National Membership Committee’s Guidelines for Technical Writing (October 15, 2020). The only advantage the National work group has over this Committee, is that of access to the updates to the National Code of Conduct, regarding diversity, inclusion, sexual harassment, harassment, and the Zero Tolerance policy, based on recent RAIN training.

>
> Brad re-established the Technology Committee, and appointed Brandon Miller as its chair, due to his vast technology background. This Committee will be responsible for demonstrating the use of new Access Technology, training Phoenix Chapter members in its use, as well as overseeing our Social Media and Facebook Webpage. Brandon voiced his appreciation for the positive impact the proper use of up-to-date access technology has in the academic, professional, and personal achievements of blind students and adults. One of his goals is to acquire samples of Assistive Technology based on the Phoenix Chapter’s Membership, so individuals can have hands-on experience, with devices such as refreshable braille displays, IOS iPhones, and Android phones. It is clear that, further discussion by the members of this Committee is needed to formulate a game-plan to seek grants, to directly work with technology companies and individuals for the purchase of and training in the use of access technology, and to properly acquire, maintain, warehouse, and manage the demonstration of and training in the use of Assistive Technology, by the Phoenix Chapter. Rodney Fletcher and Michael Smith will serve on this Committee. Please contact Brad at (815)501-1153, or at

Brad thanked Rodney for all of his hard work setting up the site, and for continuing to function as a Moderator. The list was changed from Public to Private, so it is a more secure group, limiting access to postings and member information. Only Administrators have access to the Admin Tools, where settings can be changed. Brad, Jordan, Colin, and Brandon are the Phoenix Chapter Facebook Webpage Group Administrators.
