Subject : Promoting the Readiness of Minors in Supplemental Security
Income Grant Award Announcement
The Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) is proud to announce that the State
of California was awarded the federal Promoting the Readiness of Minors in
Supplemental Security Income (PROMISE) grant, beginning October 1, 2013 for
a period of up to five years.
The PROMISE grant is a federal initiative to improve the provision and
coordination of services and supports for child Supplemental Security Income
(SSI) recipients (ages 14 to 16 at the time of enrollment) and their
families.
The services provided by the PROMISE grant will assist over 1,500 child SSI
recipients and their families to overcome major barriers to employment,
including low expectations about working, lack of access to effective
employment services, gaps in school-based services, concerns about losing
health care, and lack of knowledge of work incentives. The long-term goal
is increased self-sufficiency and decreased reliance on public benefits.
In the provision of services and supports to participating PROMISE grant SSI
recipients and their families, DOR as the lead coordinating agency, is
partnering with five other state departments including the Department of
Health Care Services, Department of Education, Department of Developmental
Services, Department of Social Services, and the Employment Development
Department; 20 Local Education Agencies (school districts and county offices
of education); and San Diego State University's Interwork Institute.
Direct support to the child SSI recipients will be initially provided
through the Local Education Agencies. Services provided to the PROMISE
grant participants will include case management, benefits planning, job
training, work experience, service coordination, and parent training and
information.
In order to provide ongoing updates and opportunities for stakeholder
feedback, a link to the PROMISE grant website will be provided on the DOR
Internet when finalized.
The Project Sponsor is Chief Deputy Director Juney Lee, the Project Director
is Deputy Director Specialized Services Joe Xavier, and the Project Manager
is Assistant Deputy Director, Collaborative Services, Workforce Development,
and Social Security Programs Jeff Riel.
