I agree with Jim that we should not put all our eggs in the Google basket.
At the same time we know that there is technology that makes it possible for
blind people to drive, www.blinddriverchallenge.org. There is no doubt that
we should mount our own effort and also find ways to work with Google. If,
however, California will not back down on requiring a driver behind the
wheel then we need to get Google to employ the NFB technology to open the
doors for blind people to become eligible to drive, at least in emergency
situations.

It may be that the "need a license to use a autonomous vehicle" ship has
saled. I suspect that no matter what the hearings are somewhat of a pro
forma show. However, we can be the game changer by providing evidence that
blind people can participate and use driverless cars. Think of the press and
benefits to all of us.

We need to have a collective discussion among ourselves soon on a strategy.

This article doesn't give the dates or locations for these hearings. Tim, Is
this something you can research and get back to us with?

Also, we should think hard about whether to team up with Google on this.  I
don't have an opinion yet, but there are reasons not to join with Google. I
think the key point is do we have arguments to make that are separate from
Google's?

There are good reasons for working with Google, they have a strong lobbying
organization and have a lot of skin in this particular argument.

On the other hand, Google will certainly dominate the conversation, leaving
the message as "Google, along with others, don't like these rules." If we
want to make arguments that stand separate from Google's we may want to
mount our own lobbying effort.  

Since this is a state matter, we'd need to do it ourselves, perhaps with
some support from the national office.
