Hello Jordan and all:
I am so excited to hear that you are already planning on attending the
national convention. It is so important that we start early to make
reservations and begin budgeting for the most valuable event a blind person
can attend each year. I always leave national conventions feeling as though
I can accomplish anything. There is nothing like seeing approximately 3,000
blind people getting around independently and helping others to learn how to
do the same.
Since I have been attending national conventions for forty something years,
I have worked out the luggage thing like this:
1. When you arrive at the airport ask someone (anyone) to direct you to a
Sky Cap. A Sky Cap is a person who walks around the airport assisting
people with luggage or whatever.
2. Be sure that you have two or three 5 dollar bills in your pocket so you
can give the Sky Cap a tip when you get to your gate.
3. Find something that will be easy for a Sky Cap to see from several feet
away and attach it to the handle of your luggage. The more bold the color,
the better. As the luggage carisell goes around in a circle the Sky Cap
will be able to spot neon colors easily. Make sure that the ribbon or tag
doesn't hang down too far because it could get caught and break away from
your luggage.
4. Also make sure that your name is on a luggage name tag on the outside of
your suitcase. Believe it or not, when the buses arrived at the state
convention last fall most of the suitcases did not have names on them and
the blind people who owned them did not know what color their suitcase was
except to say that it is black. Do you know how many black suitcases there
were on the bus? So we had a heck of a time making sure everyone got the
correct suitcase.
If you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask. This is the right
place to get good solid advice.
Sincerely,
Mary Willows
The National Federation of the blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams.
You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.

I do not know about you, but for me this summer when I am planning to attend
our national federation of the blind's convention in Orlando from June 30 to
July 5 will be my first time traveling and ever flying on my own. I have a
question regarding this how would a blind person manage the baggage claim
procedure? How would a blind person be able to retrieve his/her own bag from
a conveyor belt? Or would the airline have someone in the airport to help me
with this?
