[Nfbc-info] including deaf-blind individuals at chapter meetings

Lisa and all,
There are many different kinds of assistive listening devices, and
the way they're used depends largely on the setting. The Davis chapter, for
instance, meets at a restaurant with all of us sitting around a table. We
make it a point to sit in the quietest part of the restaurant, and a member
using an assistive listening device would either place it at the center of
the table or yes, request that members pass it around as they speak.
DOR can purchase assistive listening devices, but they are not
covered by MediCal and rarely covered by any other medical insurance. This
is an issue which is certainly on the division's radar.
Lastly, I wanted to address a point President Willows alluded to
earlier. A member who doesn't have the functional hearing to benefit from an
assistive listening device can nonetheless participate in meetings, not to
mention take part in many other activities required to function in the
world, with the aid of a sign language interpreter. Conversations are
translated either through tactile signing or traditional sign language.
Division members are researching how members can access such interpreters.
Angela

I'm wondering, does Medi-Cal pay for this divice; just curious. Also, I'm
wondering, does the person speaking into the FM transistor pass the receiver
to each person who is speaking.

Thanks so much.

From,
Lisa

Talk to Angela Fowler. She is the organizer of our affiliate Deaf-blind
group.

I should say from experience that the gentleman should have his own FM
system. It looks like a transistor radio. The person speaking wears or
holds a microphone and the hearing impaired person wears ear buds or
headphones so they can hear everything. How on earth does this person
function in the world without some method for hearing instructions or
conversations around him?

Hello,

This evening I received a troubleing message from one of our members. The
member is deaf-blind to the extent that he feels it'stoo difficult to hear
what's being said.

Chapter presidents, how do you make it work to actively include deaf-blind
members. I really don't want to see this man walk away.

From,

Lisa Irving, S. D. Chapter President
