Hello All:
Beat the heat and head to the beach!
What? The Encinitas Lions Club and multiple surf associations are sponsoring
the annual Blind Surf Day Event
For Who? Blind/visually impaired youth and adults and sighted friends and
family
When? Sunday September 9th, 9:00 am to 2:30 pm
Where? South Ponto Beach, Encinitas, California
Transportation: Local blind and visually impaired adults may contact the
Blind Community Center of San Diego at: (619) 298-5021, and ask to speak to
Sharleen Ornelas, Center Director. Priority for transportation is given to
their members. When space is available, non-members may receive a ride from
and to the Blind Community Center at 1805 Upas Street.
Additionally, check to see if the Coaster is running to/from Carlsbad
Village Station and Encinitas. If you are traveling by Amtrak, double-check
travel times.
Anyone needing to be met at the Encinitas train Depot or Carlsbad Depot
should arrive no later than 9:00 am. In the past, volunteers have shuttled
participants and service animals to/from the beach. Email Robert , "Bob",
Mangini at: blindsurfersmail at gmail.com
Food: Water, coffee and soda is provided. Donuts and a light lunch of
burgers and chips is also provided.
Surf boards; excellent sighted assistance in the water and wet suits are
also provided.
If you bring your guide dog, in the past, volunteers have kept a hawk's eye
on our dogs. Some of us take our dogs to a dog wash after a sandy and soggy
day at the beach. South Bark Dog Wash is a DIY high-end, laid-back dog wash
that offers a 50% service dog discount. Plan to be at the dog wash for at
least a hour. Shampoo, conditioner, towels and clean-up is included in the
cost. Outside dryers are a couple of bucks extra and worth it!
Lastly, if you're not partial to water, no worries. Just hang out and chill.
Warmly,
Lisa Irving, Chapter President
NFB of California, San Diego Chapter
