Subject: [NFB-Legislative-Directors] Passage of Subminimum Wage Law in California

Dear Federation Family:

We have some very exciting news regarding our state level legislative advocacy. On Monday, September 27, Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed SB 639 <https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202120220SB639> into law. This bill phases out subminimum wages for people with disabilities in the state of California by 2025. Congratulations to the National Federation of the Blind of California for advocating to get this bill across the finish line!

For more information, please read this statement from Governor Newsom’s office <https://www.gov.ca.gov/2021/09/27/governor-newsom-signs-legislation-creating-nation-leading-worker-protections-for-garment-industry-additional-measures-to-combat-unfair-pay-practices-and-improve-workplace-conditions/> , or this article from the Sacramento Bee <https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article254509782.html> .

Additionally, we have posted a model state level 14(c) elimination bill <https://nfb.org/sites/nfb.org/files/files-word/Model-State-14c-Bill.docx> in the State Resources section <https://nfb.org/programs-services/advocacy/advocacy-resources> of our website if you would like to advocate for the passage of similar legislation in your state.

Thank you for all that you do.

Be Great!

Kyle
