I was kind of hoping the pics would fit on one page so they could be viewed 
together and there wouldn't be such a large gap on page 2.
Oh well.

You could insert a manual page break before the caption for pic 2.  That
should put the caption and pic on the same page.
A manual page break in Word is control-enter.
