Another very important setting has recently been added to Gmail e-mails: "Access to Less Secure Apps". This setting is located in
the account / security component, which is also accessible from the Basic HTML interface of the Gmail web site.

Did you try using Basic HTML on the Gmail web site?  I've always been able to work with the Gmail site in that mode a lot better
than the Standard View.  After that, you can go into Settings, then Forwarding/pop/Imap and enable POP or IMAP.  After that, you can
set up Outlook.
