Accessibility Specialist provides Board staff and contractors (e.g., writers, editors, content contributors) with a facility to request information and assistance in complying with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. Applying an explicit knowledge of the accessibility requirements relevant to the Board, ensures that web applications and content conform to current Section 508 accessibility requirements. Consults with staff charged with meeting Section 508 accessibility requirements for content and applications posted on the Board's public website (PubWeb) and intranet websites.
Requires at least two years of specialized experience in understanding, organizing, and supporting the implementation of Section 508. Excellent oral and written interpersonal communication skills, ability to train others on 508 topics, customer service orientation, and the ability to solve customer problems in a timely manner a must. Demonstrated experience with assistive technology (e.g., screen readers, accessibility validation tools), HTML coding, and software. Proficiency in xhtml, including creation, modification and verifying compliance of documents. Proficiency in Adobe Dreamweaver to modify/create xhtml documents. Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat to modify/update PDF documents, including tagging, modifying the reading order, and verifying compliance. Proficiency in Abbyy Finereader version 10 or higher a plus, but not required.
Analyzes new content for conformity to established accessibility requirements, advises staff in the solution of accessibility problems, and works with staff to devise approaches to presentation of text, tables, charts, graphics, applications, and digital media to best meet accessibility requirements. Collaborates with authors on a variety of documents in presenting accessible content and, as necessary, suggests organizational, stylistic, formatting, coding, and/or programming changes. Coordinate divisions' requests for Section 508 compliance reviews and accessibility audits upon request. Must also have understanding and familiarity of web coding standards (W3C) and usability/user experience/user testing.
