[nfbcs] Using R with JAWS

Hey Cindy,
I use the version of R that comes with the cygwin package (which is a unix emulator for windows). I've heard that the ordinary windows R package that can be run through the windows command line is accessible. However, I had a lot of issues with the plain windows version; after a couple of commands, jaws would loose focus and wouldn't read what I typed or what came out of the terminal. I didn't have any of these problems with the cygwin R. However, I wouldn't recommend installing cygwin just for R, as it is a pretty annoying and big install. So if the plain windows version works well for you, then that would be better.
In terms of the general commands you will use, they are pretty easy to get from the documentation (they are accessible in that form). However, you can't open graphics that you make on the commandline without having some graphics package running as well. R studio can plot graphs on the screen, but I haven't had any success with R studio accessibility. I usually save the graphs I make on the commandline without viewing them, and then opening them in the file to show to some with commands such as:
pdf("filename.pdf")
plot(...)
dev.off()
Hope this helps,
Kevin

Subject: [nfbcs] Using R with JAWS
Hi,
If anyone has resources or tips for using R on the command line with
JAWS, I'll take them. There seems to be little documentation about
this, a couple of years old, so I mostly want to make sure that the
suggestions are similar to to learn about potentially good user
guides.
Thanks!
