Hi Tracey.
A couple of points.
1 If you are locked down you can still use narrator at my work I have a
standard account and an administrator account which gives me access to all
workstations in the provincial government, several thousand.
2 If you are locked down you can download nvda and put it on an usb flash
drive to run it that way as a normal/standard user unless the usb ports are
disabled in the computer's bios or you can extract the .exe to
c:\users\traceycarcione or whatever your login id is.
3 TN 3270 is just a folder, you can just dump it on your desktop, my
documents, or anywhere under the local profile and run it depending upon the
version in use but most mainframe's don't really care what version you have 
4 You can skip the pretty wizzards that SDI created for the more recent
installers altogether especially if your want your client keyboard mappings
and terminal types to effortlessly move from 1 pc to another just copy the
folder

I didn't know Jaws takes a dump when it abends.  I'll have to check that
out.
I have been using TN3270 for decades, and it works great.  It never makes
Jaws crash.
The emulator everyone else uses in my office is Hummingbird.  Desktop
Support is getting much more strict about what gets installed on our
desktops, so I would like to get Hummingbird to work as well as TN3270.
Logging into TSO takes 5-10 seconds, so it seems unlikely Jaws thinks the
program has stopped.
I'm not sure I can try another screen reader, with the way Desktop has us
locked down, but I can experiment with Narrator, maybe.

I'll check into the Jaws dump, if I can find it.

What terminal emulator is this?
Do you have access to another to see if an alternative terminal emulator
causes the same behavior from jaws when you login or out of TSO.
What happens when you use nvda or narrator, you may need to borrow a sighted
colleague during these tests or try a be my eyes call, even though it is not
ms-related the ms disability answer desk through be my eyes are sometimes
willing to help with cenarios where they are essentially just acting as your
eyes even if your need isn't related to windows or office 365.
Is there any settings in the config file for the terminal emulator which
specify its behavior when you login or out of tso, I know for tn3270 the
file you want to look at is a .tsp file whereas the settings for another
terminal emulator are probably in a different file.
I also did some work with 5250 terminal types using ibm software connecting
to as/400 systems in the past, but it was the not so distant past so my
memory in that area is very foggy.
I also read others suggestions, what is in the dump file created by jaws.
On a personal note I read your article in either The Seeing Eye Navigator or
Guide, hope you and pup had a great trip to Ireland.
My angle on your problem is more from a computer support specialist point of
view as that is what I do, I am not a programmer/developer, however; I do
read this list and do chime in from time too time.

This may be too esoteric, but here goes.

I'm trying to use the same terminal emulator as my colleagues, and mostly it
works OK.  The only problem is, when I log into or out of TSO, Jaws crashes.
Sometimes it restarts itself, and sometimes I have to manually restart.  The
only thing I can think of is that the mainframe is executing a few commands
automatically, and the screen may change rapidly a few times.  I tried using
insert-s to change speech to none, but it didn't help.

Any ideas?
