[nfbcs] Regarding braille note takers:

I just got an Orbit Reader. I like it. The noise it makes refreshing the braille is like the noise of shuffling a deck of cards fast, or pushing over a line of dominoes. If I was trying to sneakily read in a meeting, people would probably notice, but I tuned it out after a minute while reading by myself, and it didn't bother my husband, either.
I am a fast braille reader, and some people say the refresh is slow, but it's fast enough that it didn't slow me down at all.
I've owned notetakers with all the bells and whistles, but I found I didn't use any of them except the calculator. I want to write notes in my own way, switching codes and languages at will, and throwing in my own shorthand. I don't want my notes translated or reformatted. And I want to read braille books. I think I'll be very happy with the Orbit. Plus, the price is great, and the battery is user replaceable.
Tracy

Thirded. A “bad braille display” though? The braille on it is quite good. And, while it refreshes slower than instant, it refreshes from left to right faster than at least I can read. I’d love to see autoscrolling though. Sure, it also is a noisier than more expensive displays, but again, to meet the price point, compromises had to be made. BrailleMe chose different compromises, but they also had to make some. Yes I’d agree that the Orbit is a perfectly capable notetakerr, in the most basic sense of the term. You can take notes with it. If you intend to write *War And Peace*, which has already been written so you’d be plagiarizing it, the Orbit Reader 20 is probably not the display you want. If, however, you need something to keep personal notes to yourself, read braille documents and books, get braille from your phone, and things like that, the Orbit is a perfectly fine option.
