[NFBCS] Linux: Query, HIMS Braille Edge:

I know the CentOS system I am using comes up in Gnome graphical mode. I also
understand why I am getting the "no text" message. I am using Orca for
speech and brl. How do I get CentOS to load in brl mode? I would like to use
both the Terminal and desktop modes because the desktop has tools that it is
just quicker to bring up using a graphical method. Also, every time I have
to change something like modes, I need assistance from someone and getting
people to volunteer time from their busy lives isn't always easy.

Hi Charles,

I've reviewed the messages in this thread but I missed the Linux
distribution you're running. It sounds like your Linux is set up to log
into Gnome directly if you're getting the not in text mode message on your
display. Once you're using the graphical interface, that message is telling
you that Brltty isn't using the console mode. If you were in text or console
mode meaning you're logging into Linux with a user name and password using a
text only interface, you would be reading the screen with Brltty on your
Braille device.

I get the not in text mode message on my Ubuntu Linux computer when Gnome
comes up when I use my Vario Ultra device but before the Orca screen reader
for Gnome is loaded. If you set up Orca for Braille, you'll have support
for Gnome in its graphical format, meaning you can read the desktop and run
applications with Braille. If you have set up speech, you can also use
speech along with .
Braille mode only.

If you would prefer to run with Braille only with the graphical interface,
Orca can be run and configured for Braille only with no speech. I believe
Brltty can be set up to run automatically in Gnome without Orca, but since I
use Orca with speech and Braille, I'm not sure how to do this. Perhaps
someone more knowledgeable in Linux than I am knows how to accomplish that
part.

Lastly, if you use Orca and Braille, you can run it in terminal mode using
Gnome terminal or other terminal programs. Type alt-f2 to bring up the run
command, then type gnome-terminal. You can also bring up the terminal
through Gnome's graphical interface through its list of applications by
pressing windows key and a (this key is known as the Super key in Linux) and
this should bring up a list of all of the applications available from the
Gnome desktop interface.

I need a bit more information to help more with this issue.

Respectfully,

Beth

I did make a mistake, but not on Linux. I will look at the logs. The Braille
device is now saying that it is not in text mode. Gnome has text versions.
Will it only work in terminal mode or will it work with the Gnome program?
Thanks!

Check the status with systemctl status brltty. It will show some logs.
Maybe that will help.
Have you tried restarting brltty or running it directly to see the output?
Maybe you made a typo, but the correct command to enable the service is
"systemctl enable brltty" ("enabled" won't work).
