[NFBCS] question about Wi-Fi hotspots

I only occasionally need a hotspot, and I like my iPhone for that purpose.  It is always with me.  I have an unlimited data plan.

I always get great advice when I ask a question on this list. So, here goes.
My current cell phone plan doesn't include an option for using my iPhone as a hotspot, but I'm looking at upgrading my data plan. Is it best to do that, or purchase one of those small hotspot devices? I've looked at a couple, and I don't think that they are accessible.
I'm looking for recommendations and advice.
