[NFBCS] Best Way to Try a New Windows Version and Can Windows Be Installed Without Sighted Help

Hi Nicole, yes windows can be installed independently, at least
windows 10 can, I have not yet installed windows 11 because I need to
upgrade my jaws to 2022 first, the only problem you may have when
installing windows 11 is that you may need to modify the boot sequence
of the pc upon which you are installing so it boots first from either
dvd or usb depending upon what type of windows 11 media you have. And,
in this case, if you are doing a dual boot cenario you will want to
re-size partitions on the hd in advance of attempting the windows 11
install. Regarding how to install, you can invoke narrator at the
start, keep in mind that these are basic geniric sound drivers so for
best success you may need an usb headset.
I needed one but keep in mind my answer to this question is based on
having done this a couple of years ago here at home, at that time I
think we were at win 10 build 1709 so this answer's a bit dated.
Fyi, all my win 10 installs at work are done via pre-built images
using mdt so I can simply invoke narrator, we don't do dual partition
setups at my work so I don't often have to deal with a setup like you
are asking about.
And, I work as a computer support specialist at my work so I do
inventory control as part of my job, if I want to borrow a machine for
a month or two to test something even if it is at home I'm free to do
so as long as I clear it with my supervisor first.
Nicole, if you want to discuss this in more detail I'm curous to
learn based upon your own experience so you are most welcome to email
off list or I'm also happy to share my iPhone if you want to do
iMessage or facetime, Etc.
To be honest given what I do I find this kind of discussion more
interesting than most of the development threads which come up on this
list, it's interesting that NFB has no separate list for folks like me
who work in an IT support roll vs working in development.
Regards,
Ed Barnes
