Hello Nancy, NFB CS list, Zack, and Brandon.

First, please allow me to state that this sounds like the LPS desktop security settings, applications and settings are obviously the problem if the braille display works with jaws on a managed device but not NVDA and if the display works with nvda on an unmanaged device.

As a computer support specialist working with the provincial government in NL Canada with 20 years experience where we also apply a managed desktop might I suggest that I and others who might try to help are going into this blind, in my case it is literally and figuratively.

I have no idea what technologies are used to manage the desktops in this environment either from an applications or security settings point of view and to be able to offer any meaningful suggestions anyone, myself or anyone else, needs to know the applications and settings applied once the desktop/laptop is imaged and the security and apps are applied through GPO/Group Policy or other means to be able to suggest which setting/settings or app/apps are possibly interfearing when the display is connected to a managed device.

Zack, there are way too many unknowns in this scenario to even start to offer some suggestions.

Btw, I do have and use NVDA however I do not have any access to the braille display in question so I’m not much help to you however I don’t mind glancing through the settings in your GPO/managed desktop to see if anything stands out to me as a possible cause for your problem.

You can contact me directly or for fastest response use my work email edbarnes at gov.nl.ca <mailto:edbarnes at gov.nl.ca>

Zack, might I suggest you circle back to your IT security department to try to fill in the blanks.

I’m not opposed to a phone chat either if we can find a mutually convenient time to do so, I’m 709-682-4099.

Good luck and hope this helps!

Subject: [NFBCS] School teacher needing help connecting Brailliant with NVDA

Hello:

I am passing this on on behalf of a teacher at Lincoln Public Schools who wants to get his Brailliant working with NVDA. Students are also using this configuration without success. I will pass on any help you can offer or you can contact Zack directly.

Thank you.

We are currently having an issue with using NVDA with a Brailliant BI 40X braille display. The device will connect over Bluetooth and USB to the Windows computer and will work with JAWS, but it will not display when NVDA is the screen reader. The devices we tested are Dell Windows computers of various models, managed by LPS. We have tested on an unmanaged device with better luck. Still, I don't know which of our internal settings or applications might be interfering with the interaction between NVDA and the display. This is uncharted waters for me, and I'd be happy to share any and all troubleshooting steps we have tried. Any help or suggestions would be welcome and appreciated. I have attached Brandon, the user of the device, as he has helped me to understand the software and hardware involved, and is the user in need of a fix, as well as advocating for anyone else who needs assistance with this.

Thank you so much.
