Notre Dame, Indiana, (2 de noviembre del 2009): La Federación Nacional de

Ciegos, (NFB), la organización más grande de gente ciega en

los Estados Unidos, ha anunciado hoy que presentará a su presidente,

el Doctor Marc Maurer, el Premio del Reverendo John J. Cavanaugh, C.S.C., de
la

Asociación de alumnos de la Universidad de Notre Dame, en una ceremonia,

el 5 de noviembre. Honrarán a Maurer, graduado en 1974 de la Universidad de

Notre Dame, por sus contribuciones excepcionales en el campo del servicio
público.



Maurer ganó su grado de leyes de la Universidad de Indiana en 1977, y

comenzó a centrarse en la representación de individuos ciegos en las cortes.
Un

miembro de la Barra en Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, Maryland, y la Barra

del Tribunal Supremo, Maurer es uno de los abogados más experimentados del

campo de los derechos civiles, y de la discriminación contra los ciegos.



Maurer ha sido presidente de la Federación Nacional de Ciegos desde

1986. En esa capacidad, se ha reunído con el presidente George W. Bush

en el Despacho Oval, en el 2001, a fín de  celebrar la expedición de
Everest,

de la organización, y estaba presente cuándo Bush firmó por ley el Acto de
Apoyo

al Voto en América, en 2002. Él ha promovido la nueva tecnología para los

ciegos, incluyendo el Lector Móvil de la Federación, knfbReader Mobile, una
aplicación revolucionaria del teléfono celular

que explora y lee en voz alta la mayoría del material impreso, y el

vehículo del prototipo para el desafío del conductor ciego. Ha supervisado

la extensión visionaria del Instituto Jernigan de la Federación, el primer

instituto de entrenamiento e investigación para los ciegos, encabezado por
los ciegos. También

ha servido previamente cómo presidente de La Unión Mundial de Ciegos,

Oficinas regionales de Norteamérica y el Caribe.



El Doctor Marc Maurer, presidente de la Federación nacional de Ciegos,
